I like Southland home floor plans but I notice that they not only caulk between the logs as they are stacked but after they are stacked they run an additional bead of caulk on each outside log seam exposed to the weather. Is this this going to be a maintenence issue as time goes on?  It's alot of caulk to contend with. Also do they due this to prevent air and water leakage from shrinking logs. They do use Yellow Pine when everyone else seems to use Eastern White Pine.

LOGNC,

We own one we built in 1999 and no it is not a problem if you check seams at least two or three times a year. Then in our case setup ladders and scafold and caulk all the gaps and reseal them. Every year it is the same thing it seems as if the logs never stop changing, we keep caulk on hand at all times. Do lots of research on this site about SLH, oh the last I heard it is foreign owned. And be sure to do lots of homework. This year we will be caulking the inside as well as a large part of exterior and getting quotes on replacing all the windows.

LOGNC:

I would thoroughly check out all of the above-mentioned homes before making a decision. My VERY best advice would be to read this site from beginning to end before making a decision to cut your mistakes to a minimum.

As for Southland being owned by a foreign entity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcapita

Research Research Research, plus ask a LOT of questions on this site. These folks have vast knowledge in every area of log homes.

Hey Bug Man,

Looks like LOGNC is fishing  and not really interested in SLH. One post and no action or replies to this topic and has been a member since 7/20/08.

Just My Thoughts

Now days, the consumer ought to check out log homes that are already built, that are in foreclosure, before going through the trouble of putting a package together with a builder, etc....   I am finding there are log homes out there, being forclosed on, that are going for pretty reasonable prices.  Just a thought!

I think caulk is a staple in log homes. Our contractor uses this in building other log homes, which are now owned by my friends. So far the results are outstanding and the houses are sturdy.
